Dedication of Marker for First Confederate Officer Fatality

On May 31, 2009, the efforts of associate member and author Ed Trexler resulted in the dedication of a Virginia Department of Historic Resources Marker identifying the location of the death of the first Confederate officer, Captain John Quincy Marr, commanding the Warrenton Rifles at Fairfax Court House.  The marker is in front of the new Fairfax Court House facing Chain Bridge Rd (Hwy 123).  State Senator Chap Petersen, who has Confederate ancestors, served as the master of ceremonies.  The marker was a joint Fairfax County and City of Fairfax effort.  Lt. Cmdr. David Stringfellow and Sgt.-at-Arms Tom Phillips carried the Betsy Ross flag and the Confederate Battle flag, respectively, in the color guard.  At the corner of Main St. & Chain Bridge stands a monument to Capt. Marr, erected in 1904
