Preservation of History --
Fairfax Blvd preserved as Lee Highway
The roadway from Kamp Washington to Fairfax Circle in the City of Fairfax Virginia is jointly designated
as US Routes 29 and 50. This stretch of roadway in Fairfax has always been known and marked as "Lee Highway." On May 25
2005, the Fairfax City Council voted unanimously to designate that stretch of US 50 as "Fairfax Boulevard" effective January 1, 2006. The clear intent was for the corridor between Kamp Washington and Fairfax Circle to be designated "Fairfax Boulevard."
On March 20, 1922, the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia designated the entire length of of US
Route 29 inside the state, which runs from Tennessee, south of Danville, to the Arlington
Washington DC line, as "Lee Highway". The Virginia Department of Transportation has informed us that, for their purposes, US 29 will remain Lee Highway throughout its length until the designation is changed by the General Assembly.
Efforts of the Frank Stringfellow Camp, including protests and letters to the local newspapers, resulted in a "compromise." The City still is calling the stretch of roadway "Fairfax Boulevard" while keeping the name "Lee Highway." The City says the original intention was to "brand" the name of the road so people will know they are in the City of Fairfax.
While not a complete success, the Camp is pleased that the name of General Robert E. Lee still remains in the City of Fairfax.
